MATLAB or SCILAB MathWorks and MATLAB Simulink
The course “MATLAB and Its Applications in Engineering” is an intensive 24-module program designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of MATLAB and Simulink as computational, modeling, and simulation tools. MATLAB has become an essential platform across engineering disciplines for developing algorithms, analyzing data, and prototyping complex systems. This course emphasizes not just MATLAB syntax, but how to think, analyze, and solve engineering problems computationally.
The curriculum is divided into two major parts. Part I (Modules 1–12) develops strong core skills in MATLAB programming, numerical computation, data visualization, symbolic math, optimization techniques, and dynamic system simulation using Simulink. Students learn to write efficient code, perform mathematical modeling, and handle real-world datasets, laying a foundation for advanced applications.
Part II (Modules 13–24) focuses on specialized applications for major engineering disciplines:
- Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) students explore digital signal processing, modulation schemes, wireless link analysis, and antenna simulations using MATLAB toolboxes.
- Electrical Engineering (EE) students analyze power systems, simulate control strategies, and study power electronics using MATLAB and Simscape Electrical.
- Mechanical Engineering (ME) students model vibrations, robotics kinematics, and thermal-fluid systems to analyze physical behavior and validate designs.
- Computer Science Engineering (CSE) students use MATLAB for algorithm design, AI/ML model development, image processing, and big data analytics.
Throughout the course, students engage in structured laboratory sessions, case studies, and mini-projects after every few modules. The program culminates in an integrated capstone project, encouraging cross-disciplinary collaboration and practical problem-solving using MATLAB and Simulink. This ensures graduates are prepared for research, internships, and professional work environments where MATLAB is widely used.
Course Objectives
- To introduce MATLAB as a versatile tool for computation, visualization, and system modeling.
- To develop core programming and simulation skills for mathematical and engineering analysis.
- To explore MATLAB toolboxes and Simulink for solving real-world, discipline-specific problems.
- To build the ability to integrate MATLAB workflows into research and industry projects.
- To prepare students for careers that demand computational proficiency and interdisciplinary design thinking.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Navigate MATLAB and Simulink environments with proficiency.
- Write modular programs, handle data, and visualize complex results effectively.
- Perform symbolic, numerical, and optimization-based computations.
- Model and simulate systems in ECE, EE, ME, and CSE using specialized MATLAB toolboxes.
